January 20, 2001
Dear Sir/Madam,

Professor Makoto Ohkusu will reach the retirement age of Kyushu University at the end of this coming March. After starting his academic career at Kyushu University in 1967, he has been involved in research and education for 34 years. As you may know, he has made a very significant contribution to the academic discipline of ship and marine hydrodynamics. He has also contributed to the development of the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, and Kyushu University, as the director, as councilor and as member of many committees.

In honor of Professor Ohkusu on the occasion of his retirement, an International Conference will be held on April 27th (Friday) 2001, and will be followed by a dinner party at KKR Hotel Hakata located near the center of Fukuoka city, Japan. (For more details, please see a provisional schedule for the Conference.) The participation fee will be 10,000 Japanese Yen (approximately 90 US dollars) per person; this includes the dinner, and the book containing selected papers from the publications of Professor Ohkusu and the papers to be presented by five keynote speakers at the Conference.

The date of this Conference has been chosen bearing in mind the schedule of the 16th International Workshop on Water Waves and Floating Bodies (IWWWFB), to be held from April 22nd through April 25th, at Hiroshima, Japan. We imagine that it will be easier for you to attend the Conference if you are already coming to Hiroshima for the 16th IWWWFB. (It takes about one and half hours by bullet train between Hiroshima and Fukuoka.) We would be very pleased if you could participate in the Conference, and the dinner party in honor of Professor Ohkusu's retirement.

If you are intending to participate in our International Conference, please fax the registration form (provided by MS WORD and PDF file) or send an e-mail including necessary information for the registration to <kashi@riam.kyushu-u.ac.jp>, before the end of March 2001.

I am looking forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,

Masashi Kashiwagi,
Associate Professor of
Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University
