- Oceanic response to a category 4 Typhoon Megi in 2010 in western Pacific observed using an array of seven EM-APEX floats will be described. Using a simplified momentum budget, the surface wind stress is estimated. For the first time, estimates of drag coefficient at a wind speed greater than 55m/s are derived using direct oceanic measurements. A significant cross-wind component of the surface wind stress is found. The surface wind stress is oriented clockwise to the surface wind by more than 20 degrees. A 3D oceanic process model is performed to simulate the observed surface mixed layer cooling. The observed cooling in the surface mixed layer is better simulated by including both the down-wind and cross-wind surface wind stress. Excluding the cross-wind stress, the model underestimates the surface mixed layer cooling.
