Abstract | Baroclinic instability of a stratified rotating fluid is the primary mechanism for mesoscale eddy activity in the ocean. The mesoscale eddy field is crucial in shaping the ocean mean state (i.e. climatology), however ocean climate models often do not explicitly resolve the mesoscale eddy field. Increasingly it has been found that standard parameterisation schemes for mesoscale eddies are unable to reproduce the climatological sensitivity of models that permit an explicit mesoscale eddy field for the same changes in forcing. A geometrically informed, energetically constrained mesoscale parameterisation is proposed and implemented in a hierarchy of ocean relevant models. It is found that various climatological responses under changing wind forcing are substantially improved; in particular, the proposed scheme provides a first instance where eddy saturation is reproduced in an internally consistent manner. |
